Topic: Introduction to Science Club

Today was the second week of Science Club.

Joshua Kim, our club president, first had a presentation about Geckos. As you can see in the picture below, geckos have tiny hairs on their feet that allow them to easily stick to glass or walls.

For additional information, we watched a 9 minute TED lecture. It began by explaining that science classes usually start with the scientific method. The speaker said we should think about how curiosity can benefit society, and introduced the example of how people discovered the way geckos stick to surfaces.

By their experiments, students found that geckos have hairy toes. They also discovered that each hair is extremely tiny compared to a single strand of human hair.

They explored how gecko features could be applied to society. They found that they could inspire products like adhesives, sports equipment, biomedical devices, robots, clothing, whigs, and also toys. For example, people can create synthetic gecko tapes, bandages inspired by geckos, and search-and-rescue robots, showing how these discoveries can benefit society.

In one case, search-and-rescue robots inspired by geckos can quickly find people trapped in collapsed buildings. Thanks to these robots, people can even survive for more than two weeks.

After the lecture, we came up with questions for the "Q & A with SNU Professors” session that we had planned last week.

Through the upcoming Q&A session, we hope that students will likely become more interested in science and have the opportunity to learn things they didn’t know before.
